First, the myth: no, ships are not banned
You will read that cruise ships are banned from Geiranger in 2026. They are not. The zero-emission rule that took effect on 1 January 2026 (see regjeringen.no) applies to vessels under 10,000 GT; large cruise ships are exempt until 2032, when the requirement covers all passenger vessels. More than 80 cruise calls are on the 2026 schedule. What the rule did change is the small-boat fleet you can join for an hour — already silent and hybrid-electric.

The RIB safari, 1 hour. Meets at Maråkvegen 35, Geiranger Brygge — the old boathouse by the fjord centre, about 100 m from the cruise dock — ten minutes before departure, with boats leaving around ten past the hour. The 75-minute sightseeing cruise. Same pier, behind the Tourist Information at Geirangervegen 2. Exchange your ticket at the tourist information office first and be there ten minutes early. It is the biggest of the three boats and the one that fills up when several ships are in.
Book before you sail, not on the dock
On a multi-ship day the small boats sell out, and they board by the clock, not by your tender queue. Book the slot before your cruise starts — free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure means a changed itinerary costs you nothing. Give yourself a real margin against all-aboard. The one-hour boats leave roughly hourly, so taking one departure earlier than the last possible slot costs you little and removes the sprint.
